Best free go-to-market tools for bootstrapped founders
We make InstinctGTM, it has a free plan, and the free plan cannot send. That is the honest starting point for a guide to free tools: every free plan stops somewhere, and the useful question is where. A bootstrapped founder can get a contact database, a CRM, enrichment, scheduling and a writing assistant for nothing, as long as they know each limit before they build on it. Every limit below was read off the vendor’s own page on 3 October 2026.
The short answer
Put together, the free plans cover most of the early work: Apollo.io for a contact database, HubSpot or Attio for a CRM, Clay to try enrichment, Buffer for scheduling, and ours to see what you would write and to whom. What none of them gives you free is sending at any real volume, and that is where you will spend your first money.
- A free contact database: Apollo.io, 900 credits per seat a year
- A free CRM for a small team: Attio, up to 3 seats on the free plan
- Trying enrichment before paying: Clay, unlimited seats, 200 rows a table
- Seeing what to write and to whom: InstinctGTM, writes for free and cannot send
The picks at a glance
| Tool | Best for | Price | Where the free plan stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apollo.io | A free contact database | Free, then $49/seat | 900 credits per seat a year |
| Attio | A free CRM for a small team | Free, then $44/user/mo | Up to 3 seats |
| HubSpot | A free CRM you can grow into | Free CRM plan | Paid tiers priced per seat |
| Clay | Trying enrichment before paying | Free, then $167/mo | 100 Data Credits and 500 Actions a month |
| Buffer | Free scheduling to the networks you use | Free, then $5/channel | 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts each |
| InstinctGTM(ours) | Seeing what to write and to whom | Free | Writes for every channel; cannot send |
What does a bootstrapped founder actually need for free?
Somewhere to find people, somewhere to keep track of the conversations, and a way to be seen. All three are available free, in separate tools, and each is good enough to find out whether a channel works.
What is rarely free is sending. A vendor that lets anybody send cold email at volume for nothing carries the reputation cost of whoever abuses it, so free plans stop at, or just before, sending.
When is it worth paying for a go-to-market tool?
When a free plan has already produced a reply or a customer and the limit is the only thing stopping the next one. Paying before that buys capacity for a channel you have not proven.
Pay for one tool at a time, starting with whichever limit you hit first.
Apollo.io
- Best for
- Price
- Free, then $49/seat
- Where the free plan stops
Apollo’s free plan carries 900 credits per seat a year against a database of 240M+ contacts and 30M+ accounts, and one connected mailbox per user, per its pages on 3 October 2026. Basic is $49 per seat a month billed annually.
It is the only free plan here that combines finding people with a way to email them.
What it does not do: Nine hundred credits a year is enough to test a list, not to run a channel, and the paid plan is per seat.
Attio
- Best for
- Price
- Free, then $44/user/mo
- Where the free plan stops
Attio has a free plan for up to three seats, with real-time contact syncing and automatic enrichment. Plus is $44 per user a month on monthly billing or $35 billed annually, and Pro, at $99 monthly or $79 annually, adds sequences, per its pricing page on 3 October 2026.
For a founding team of two or three, the free plan is a real CRM rather than a trial.
What it does not do: Sequences start on Pro, so the free plan keeps track of conversations rather than starting them.
HubSpot
- Best for
- Price
- Free CRM plan
- Where the free plan stops
HubSpot’s pricing page lists a free CRM plan, with paid tiers priced per seat above it, as read on 3 October 2026.
If you expect to add marketing and service tools later, starting in the CRM those tools plug into saves a migration.
What it does not do: Its pricing page showed euros when we read it from Europe, so we have not printed a dollar figure for the paid tiers. Check the price in your own currency before planning on them.
Clay
- Best for
- Price
- Free, then $167/mo
- Where the free plan stops
Clay’s free plan includes unlimited seats and tables, up to 200 rows a table, and comes with 100 Data Credits and 500 Actions a month, per its pricing page on 3 October 2026. Launch is $167 a month on monthly billing.
It is enough to learn how enrichment waterfalls work on a small list before deciding whether you need them.
What it does not do: The monthly allowance is small, and signal tracking and phone numbers start on Launch.
Buffer
- Best for
- Price
- Free, then $5/channel
- Where the free plan stops
Buffer is free for up to three channels, with an AI Assistant on every plan, and Essentials is $5 per channel a month billed yearly, per its pricing page on 3 October 2026.
For a founder posting on two or three networks, the free plan covers it.
What it does not do: The free plan holds 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, so it suits posting weekly rather than planning a month ahead.
InstinctGTM
Ours- Best for
- Price
- Free
- Where the free plan stops
InstinctGTM’s free plan covers one venture: content for every channel with a monthly limit, 10 watched companies, and 3 accounts with the dated evidence for why each is worth writing to now. Everything is copy-ready for you to publish or send yourself.
It is the free plan to use when the question is what to say and to whom, rather than how to send it.
What it does not do: It cannot send on the free plan, at all. That boundary is deliberate, and sending starts on Founder at $149 a month.
Which one should you choose?
You do not know who to contact.
Apollo.io, because it is the only free plan here that finds people and lets you email them.
You are two or three founders and need to track conversations.
Attio, because its free plan is a real CRM for up to three seats.
You want to learn enrichment before paying for it.
Clay, because the free plan has unlimited seats and a small monthly allowance to practise on.
You know who, and you are stuck on what to say.
InstinctGTM, because its free plan writes the message and the posts, with the evidence, for you to send yourself.
What to do this week
- Pick one free tool per job, not three for the same job.
- Write down each free limit next to the tool, so you know which wall you will hit first.
- Run one channel on free plans for a month.
- Pay for the first limit you hit, and only that one.
Questions people ask
Can I do cold email for free?
Apollo.io’s free plan includes 900 credits per seat a year and one connected mailbox per user, per its pages read on 3 October 2026, which is enough to test a small list. InstinctGTM’s free plan writes the messages and cannot send them.
Which free CRM suits a founder?
Attio is free for up to three seats and HubSpot lists a free CRM plan, per their pricing pages read on 3 October 2026. Attio suits a small founding team; HubSpot suits a company that expects to add its marketing and service tools later.
Is Clay free?
It has a free plan with unlimited seats and tables, up to 200 rows a table, and 100 Data Credits and 500 Actions a month, per its pricing page read on 3 October 2026. Launch, at $167 a month on monthly billing, adds signal tracking and phone numbers.
Free plans are built to show you the product, and the good ones show enough to prove a channel. Stack them deliberately, one per job, and treat each limit as a question: has this channel earned the first payment yet? When one has, pay for that, and keep the rest free.
