Which marketing channel should I start with?

Start with the cheapest channel that reaches your buyers directly and fits your hours and budget, then judge it on a clock. First Channel Finder, a free tool from InstinctGTM, takes six answers and returns one channel, a backup, the first test, and the success and stop lines.

Question 1 of 6
What do you sell?

How this works

  1. 1Channels you cannot afford or have no hours for are removed first, and so is anything you tried that did not work.
  2. 2Channels that reach people one at a time, like cold email and introductions, need buyers you can name by job title or company type. A "no" removes them.
  3. 3Each remaining channel is scored on how well it fits what you sell and your price, with points for a channel that worked for you before.
  4. 4A tie goes to the channel with the shorter clock, because a fast first signal teaches you more in your first month.
  5. 5The clock, the success line and the stop line come from the starting rules a plan uses for that channel.

Cold email, with Referral partners as the backup

You can name your buyers by title or company type, so you can reach them one at a time. At $10k to $50k a customer a year, one conversation is worth the time it takes. Cold email suits a consultancy or fractional role.

What it cannot tell you

  • It knows six answers, not your market. A buyer who lives in one community changes everything and it cannot see that.
  • It picks a starting point. The second and third channels depend on what the first one teaches you.
  • The fit scores are starting rules, and it does not rank channels it does not know, like podcasts or physical mail.

Questions people ask

What is the best first marketing channel for B2B SaaS?

It depends on how you sell. Sales-led software with a high price usually starts with cold email to named accounts or LinkedIn posts the buying team reads. Self-serve software with a low price usually starts where buyers already gather, in communities, directories or on X.

How do I choose the right marketing channel?

Remove what you cannot afford or staff, then pick the channel that reaches your buyers most directly at your price. Judge it on a clock with a success line and a stop line written down before you start.

Which marketing channel should an agency start with?

Agencies and consultancies usually start with the people who already know them, and with partners who sell to the same buyers. Both are free, both reach buyers one at a time, and an introduction carries trust a cold message has to earn.

How many channels should I run at once?

One to start, with a backup ready. A second channel before the first has a verdict splits your hours and leaves both without enough volume to judge.

Should I start with paid ads?

Only with a budget for a fair test and a page that already turns visitors into conversations. Ads multiply what works; they rarely find it for you.

The short version, if you would rather not run it

Founders rarely fail at a channel because the channel was wrong. They fail because they ran four at once, each with too little volume to say anything, and stopped all of them on a bad week.

Picking one channel is mostly ruling others out. A $0 budget rules out ads. Three hours a week rules out anything that needs daily replies. A buyer you cannot name by title rules out cold email. What survives is a short list, and the right first channel is usually the one on that list that reaches buyers most directly at your price.
