Best sales tool for technical founders

We make InstinctGTM, and it is one of the five tools below. Several of the others are better for a technical founder who wants to build their own sales machine, and this page says so. The split is simple: some tools reward you for building, with APIs, functions and webhooks, and some exist so you do not have to. Which you want depends on whether building the machine is a good use of your week. Prices were read off each vendor’s own page on 3 October 2026.

The short answer

If you enjoy building and want full control, use Clay as the workbench and an API-friendly sender such as Smartlead. If you want a CRM you can shape, Attio has a real free plan. If you want the data and the sequences behind an API and an agent, Apollo.io. If you would rather not become a salesperson at all, pick a tool that drafts from your product and asks you only to approve.

  • Building your pipeline as workflows: Clay, functions on Launch, any HTTP API on Growth
  • A CRM for a founding team: Attio, free for up to 3 seats
  • Sending you wire into your own systems: Smartlead, API and webhooks from $39 a month
  • Not having to become a salesperson: InstinctGTM, drafts from your product, you approve

What makes selling different for a technical founder?

The instinct is to build the system before running the process. That works for software, and it tends to fail for selling, where the first twenty conversations teach you what the system should have been.

So the tool matters less than the order. Talk to twenty companies by hand, then automate the parts you now understand.

Should a technical founder build an outbound stack or buy one?

Build if you enjoy it and the stack is an asset you will keep improving. Clay, an API-friendly sender and a CRM you can shape will take you a long way, and nothing here is more flexible.

Buy if every hour on the machine is an hour off the product. The real cost of building is the evenings, more than the subscriptions.

Clay

Best for
Building your pipeline as workflows
Price
Free, then $167/mo
For somebody who builds
Functions, HTTP API integration, MCP

Clay lists Functions you can reuse across workflows on Launch, and integration with any HTTP API on Growth, alongside enrichment across 150+ providers and an MCP for Claude and ChatGPT. It has a free plan, then $167 a month on Launch for monthly billing, per its pages on 3 October 2026.

For a founder who thinks in pipelines, it is the closest thing to a programmable sales workbench.

What it does not do: You build and maintain everything, and the bill follows usage, so a workflow that runs too often costs you before it teaches you anything.

Attio

Best for
A CRM for a founding team
Price
Free, then $44/user/mo
For somebody who builds
Free for up to 3 seats

Attio has a free plan for up to three seats with real-time contact syncing and automatic enrichment. Plus is $44 per user a month on monthly billing or $35 annually, and Pro, at $99 monthly or $79 annually, adds sequences and call intelligence, per its pricing page on 3 October 2026.

For a technical team that wants its CRM to feel like part of its own stack, it is the obvious first look.

What it does not do: It is a CRM. It records and organises; finding companies and deciding when to write is somebody else’s job.

Smartlead

Best for
Sending you wire into your own systems
Price
$39/mo Base, monthly
For somebody who builds
API and webhooks in the plan grid

Smartlead lists API and webhooks in its plan grid, and Base is $39 a month on monthly billing or $32 billed yearly, for 2,000 contacts and 6,000 sends, per its pricing page on 3 October 2026.

If you want your own code to decide who gets what and hand the sending to a dedicated platform, this is a cheap place to start.

What it does not do: Several features are add-ons priced on top of the plan, so model the bill before you build on it.

Apollo.io

Best for
Data and sequences behind an agent
Price
Free, then $49/seat
For somebody who builds
MCP on any plan, including free

Apollo MCP connects its database of 240M+ contacts and 30M+ accounts to Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity on any plan, including free, and its documented tools include sequences and sending one-off emails. Basic is $49 per seat a month billed annually, per its pages on 3 October 2026.

If you would rather drive sales from an agent than from a dashboard, this gives the agent the most to work with.

What it does not do: An agent connected with an API key acts as the workspace’s longest-standing admin, per Apollo’s docs, so scope what it is asked to do with care.

InstinctGTM

Ours
Best for
Not having to become a salesperson
Price
Free, then $149/mo
For somebody who builds
MCP and the API on every paid plan

InstinctGTM is for the founder who would rather not build the machine. It reads your product site and your own writing, watches companies you chose for dated public change, and drafts the message and the posts, each with its evidence. You approve, and it sends from your own mailbox. Its MCP server works from Claude, Cursor or any client that speaks MCP, on every paid plan.

Founder is $149 a month and includes the MCP server and the versioned API.

What it does not do: It is not a toolkit. You cannot script your own enrichment or build your own scoring, and the API is on Operator only. If you want to build the machine yourself, Clay is the better workbench.

See the plans

Which one should you choose?

  • You want to build the machine and enjoy doing it.

Clay, because functions, HTTP API integration and an MCP make it the most programmable option here.

  • You need a CRM your team will use.

Attio, because its free plan covers a founding team of three.

  • Your own code decides who to contact and you want somewhere to send from.

Smartlead, because API and webhooks from $39 a month.

  • You would rather spend the week on the product.

InstinctGTM, because it drafts from your product and your market, and you only approve.

What to do this week

  1. Talk to five companies by hand before connecting any tool, and write down what you said that landed.
  2. Decide whether building the machine is a good use of your evenings. Be honest.
  3. If it is, start with Clay and one sender. If it is not, start with a tool that drafts for you.

Can I run sales from Claude Code or Cursor?
